Traveling To Vero Beach

Traveling To Vero Beach — Discovering Vero BeachIn this section of my website I would like to offer some advice about traveling to Vero Beach as well as offering some observations and personal preferences. Before I get started I would like to share an observation which I’m sure is not unique to me. The observation is simply this: Vero Beach is not difficult or particularly time consuming to get to BUT if you compare it to other destinations in Florida which have a major airport nearby it does take a bit longer to get to. Having said that, I feel that because it takes a little more time to get to Vero Beach we manage to avoid much of the traffic and overcrowding which plagues most of South Florida as well as many other destinations around the state. This is a trade off that I am very comfortable with. Air Travel: Starting locally, let me tell you about The Vero Beach Regional Airport (VRB). The airport is very conveniently located just west of US-1 and north of Rt 60. The airport was built in 1929 and served as a Naval Air Station during WW2. For years there was commercial service to the Vero Beach Airport by Eastern Air Lines however that commercial service ended in the early 1970’s. In late 2015 Elite Airways began non stop service to Vero from Newark NJ. At first there were only 2 flights a week but this route quickly became Elite Airways most popular route and the number of flights per week has increased. Currently Elite Airways offers service to Newark NJ and White Plains NY throughout the year as well as seasonal service to Portland ME and Asheville NC. There is also talk about expanding service from Vero to Central Texas as well as more destinations in the New England area. We are also seeing an increasing volume of private jet traffic into and out of the Vero Beach Regional airport. Currently the Vero Beach Regional Airport is the 7th busiest airport in Florida and the 43rd busiest airport in the US when you measure by the number of flight landings and take offs. The next closest airport with commercial service is Orlando Melbourne International Airport (MLB) in Melbourne Florida. Melbourne is a little over 40 miles north of Vero beach and a drive to MLB from Vero with normal traffic should take between 50 and 55 minutes. Service to MLB is certainly greater than to VRB however it is relatively thin in comparison to your next two options. It is worth checking to see if there are convenient flights from MLB to your destination however I wouldn’t count on that being a sure thing.Palm Beach International Airport or PBI would be the closest major airport and is located about 80 miles south of Vero Beach. Typical travel time to PBI would be about 1 hour and 25 minutes BUT the big variable is the traffic on either I-95 or the FL Turnpike once you get south of Port St. Lucie. Depending upon the time of day that you are traveling you can easily add on 15 or 20 minutes due to traffic volume in Palm Beach County. You will find flights or at least connecting routes to most destinations that you would have in mind and I have found PBI pretty easy to get into and out of. Orlando International Airport (MCO) is often my airport of choice …… and choice is the key word. MCO typically offers the most flight options to wherever I am flying and often has the best fairs too. At about 98 miles away from Vero it is a little further of a drive (compared to PBI) however it is usually an easy drive which takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes give or take. I always check Google Maps before I leave Vero for MCO because you can take either I-95 or the FL Turnpike. With normal traffic there is only a few minutes difference in drive time between the two roads … but I check for possible construction or accidents and if one way looks slow I’ll just take the other route. Unless…
